A new kind of education centre is opening in the north of Spain this month, as the famous spanish restaurateur Ferran Adria has announced the revolutiontary idea of a gastronomy university. This new venture will be located in San Sebastian and is expected to open its doors to students for the first time in September 2011 and will be known as the Basque Culinary Centre. Not only is the idea something different to the norm, but also the architecture behind it, as the building itself has been designed to resemble a stack of plates, an unusual yet interesting structure nonetheless.

The institution itself will be the first to offer a four year degree in culinary arts as well as Masters and shorter courses for those with a less academic interest, and everything available will be taught in both English and Spanish. Guest lecturers have been suggested to come from around the world, including Heston Blumenthal from the famed Fat Duck in Berkshire.

The course itself is hoped to raise the profile of spanish cuisine, and in particular that of this little known region which boasts a total of 16 Michelin stars in its nine restarants, with studies focused on scientific innovation and 'molecular gastromony' to create new recipes. The founder himself is famed for his more contraversial ideas, and the creation of dishes such as egg and bacon ice cream and chocolate wine… So with a whole university to develop more bizarre ideas, what will he come up with next??
