Las Fallas fiesta approaches!

by Stephen Maher

On the east coast of Spain, gracing the Mediterranean shores, you will find the bustling city of Valencia. The metropolitan area boasts a population over 1,000,000, it is home to the origin of paella and this is where we will find the emblazoned ceremony of Las Fallas!

Las Fallas is a festival that started in a tradition of celebration for the approaching spring and St. Joseph's day, the patron saint of carpenters. In the 13th century carpenters would burn the candle holders that lit their shops in the streets on March 19th. One year, a carpenter dressed up his candle holder and told a story to go with the ceremony. Little by little, the tradition grew and evolved into the elaborate parade and celebration we know today as Las Fallas.

With Valencia's typically milder climate, expect this year's celebration to be warmly welcomed after the snow and cold in Europe this winter. I will personally be there and hope to get some great stories. See you there!

Cheers!
