Exhibitions with a twist!

by Laura Ellis

Fancy doing something a bit different next time you're in Spain? Well look no further than the Southern Andalusian capital of Seville. Famous for its more traditional exhibits and buildings including the Cathedral of Seville, constructed on the site of a forer mosque, or the beautiful Torre del Oro, a new artist twist is being opened on the streets of this city.

Commencing officially yesterday, the streets of Seville are now home to 52 fridges turned works of art, each uniquely decorated. Examples include one featuring a heart pierced by Cupid's arrow, as well as an upright garden scene and another painted red and modelled as a car, whilst also being stuffed with food, apparently meant to represent fast food. The range of ideas is wide, and these otherwise defunct appliances now appear as ideas ranging from handbags to coffins.

It's not the only way in which Seville has recently tried to attract tourists, with the re-opening of the boat hire enterprise at the Plaza de España, and the exhibit will move to key cities such as Tokyo and New York showing Seville's continual cultural importance when featuring alongside cities such as these.

With ideas originating from revolutionary Cuban artists such as Jorge Perugorría, this unique exhibition is something not to be missed. The leaders of this phenomenon are claimed this excess on the streets can only serve to cool down the sweltering city, and lets face it, it's definitely original! The only question remains… Can we use them??
