Spanish beyond All America

by Dilek

In United States with more than 50 million of population the largest minority is held by the Spanish speaking population and it is growing with a constant pace. Spanish is the official language of 21 countries primarily Spain and Latin American countries for the last few years, and here to say it has got more attention than the previous years. The undeniable power of Hispanic culture was also visible during the US elections.

During the election, candidates of both sides realize the importance of Hispanic population and we saw the examples like for the Cuba descent Republican Florida senator Marco Rubio said in his speech" “'En este país, ustedes van a poder lograr todas las cosas que nosotros no pudimos” which means “In this country, you will be able to achieve all the things that we could not.” This sentence shows another aspect of Spanish speaking population that they are the base of the future of a nation; they take part in most of the parts in society getting higher degrees and establishing big corporations. No one can deny the influence of Hispanic culture on American society and the demographics show that it is impossible to think United States without Hispanic people also there is a strong belief that in 10 years time Oval Office will host a Latino/a president.

In this sense, understanding a community gains more importance than ever and the importance of Spanish is not limited with politics. The economics of Spanish is far beyond United States or the whole American continent. More than %40 of the Hispanic people speak Spanish at home and %60 wants their kids to be bilingual. The schools and the institutions started to give the importance it deserves. Media, newspapers and commercials are in Spanish so as to reach the Hispanic consumers. It is also advised the diversity of Hispanics should also be taken into account as the food, the music and even some traditions differ depending on the country.

In Brazil, there is a demand of 20.000 teachers of Spanish and in Asian countries like China, Singapore or Korea there is a permanent request for more Cervantes Institutes. 18 millions of students study Spanish as a foreign language all throughout the world. It is the second mostly used language and the number of people learning Spanish is increasing in every part of the world. In 2030 it is believed that %7.5 of the world population will be Spanish speaker.

In the near future Spanish will go beyond the American land and reach other parts of the world therefore the importance of this language can not be ignored or overlooked.
