$300,000 in Scholarships Offered to Hispanic Students

by Matthew Leake

The Spanish language television network Univision, which broadcasts thoughout America is set to award $300,000 worth of scholarships to Hispanic students. The new “Becas Univision” scholarship program is part of the company’s successful campaign, “Es el Momento” to promote education to the Hispanic population within the United States.

The aim of the scholarships is to help close the education gap that exists in the United States by helping underprivileged students of Hispanic origin afford to attend university. Money will be made available as of 2012 for students who show outstanding academic ability, have overcome adverse circumstances, and who partake in extra-curricular activities.

Although in recent years the number of Hispanic students continuing into higher education in America has risen, the fact remains that relatively few actually complete a university degree and graduate and of those who do, the level of academic achievement is fairly low. The “Becas Univision” are designed to reverse this trend.

Population growth within the United States is being driven by an ever expanding Hispanic community from Mexico and other Latin American countries. Univision hopes to foster a college bound culture among this community and believes in the long run, efforts such as the “Becas Univision” will significantly boost America’s prosperity and economic success.
