Nadal supports responsible drinking campaign

by Amy Lambert

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal proves he’s a great role model both on and off the court by becoming the new international ambassador of the company Bacardi Ltd’s responsible drinking campaign. The campaign was first started in April 2008, with Formula One superstar Michael Shumacher as its ambassador. Now, however, it’s the turn of the Majorcan tennis champion to express how he really feels about the consumption of alcohol, having just started a 3 year contract with the company.

The main slogan of the campaign is "Champions drink responsibly", which is a fitting title considering Nadal’s nine Grand Slam titles to date. Since the start of his career he has been seen as a Spanish national treasure, but now he’s set to prove to the rest of the world that he’s more than just a great tennis player, as he appears in the campaign’s posters and global events to promote healthy attitudes towards drinking, particularly among the young generation.

A new non-alcoholic cocktail has also been named in his honor: ‘Rafa’s Berry Smash’. This drink, created by Bacardi, is aimed at those of legal drinking age, but substitutes the alcohol with some of Nadal’s favourite ingredients, such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.

Although he admits he enjoys a drink with friends and family from time to time, he states that drinking responsibly is very important for him, and should be for others too. What a great role model!
