Ten Tips to Speak and Write Spanish Better

by Dilek

While learning Spanish, it is necessary to be patient and work hard to reach a good level. In order to improve writing and speaking skills I gathered some tips which will fire up your enthusiasm and assist in your studies.

-    Be careful about the basic grammar. Avoid using showy and long sentences shortly after you start studying, keeping it simple always pays you back more. Dominating the different usage of ser and estar might be a good start.
-    The vocabulary is the most lingering part of learning. Study the most used vocabulary with genders, memorize the words like “la mesa” or “el libro” rather than only libro or mesa.
-    Read Spanish books. It is a must thing to do to improve Spanish. If your level is basic you can read the well known child books and it is always better to start from basic and advance slowly.
-    Listen to music. It is also thought that it is easier for the brain to absorb new vocabulary and recall easily with the help of melody. Also radios, TV programs and series are effective ways to learn new words.
-    If your native language doesn’t have the same or similar sounds as in Spanish it may lead to some bizarre moments. Native people would understand you yet so as to prevent any misunderstanding and to keep a better communication it is better to try to pronounce correctly.
-    Write journals and letters. To get a better understanding of different forms, write samples of job application, complaint letters or announcements. You can keep a journal which helps you to remember daily words.
-    Always talk regardless of making many mistakes. It is the only way to learn the correct form of a language. False friends are the most tricky parts of speaking, which are similar words in your language yet mean totally different. For example embarrassed and embarazada.
-    Penpals or intercambio (language exchange) It is a win-win situation for both sides. You can find someone from a Spanish speaking country who wants to practice your native language. Writing letters or talking online is a good option to improve both speaking and writing skills.
-    Spanish courses. There are specially designed Spanish Conversation Courses to help the students to adapt in daily life situations and express themselves accordingly.
-    Get to know the culture of the Spanish speaking countries. Language lives with music, art and history  therefore; when you understand the culture, you better speak the language.
