On December 3, our don Quijote school in Madrid moves to a new location! We've moved the school to the same building as our student residence to facilitate access to our Spanish classes and to add to the general comfort of our students.
The building, located right in the center of Madrid has been completely renovated on this inside, while the charm of its typical Madrileño architecture has been faithfully maintained on the outside. It is surrounded by shopping and is just 5 minutes from Spain’s largest department store El Corte Ingles.
For entertainment, just cross the street to find a variety of bars and restaurants, from typical tapas bars to international cuisine. There is also a metro station right at the school's front door for easy access to the rest of the city.
Here's a Spanish culture article prepared by don Quijote for the English language local press in Spain - with a bit of vocabulary and a few handy Spanish phrases waiting for at the end of the read. These are indeed people you will read about, sometimes daily, in the Spanish news:
Spain's most famous – Los más famosos de España
Smooth Latino crooners? Hip-swinging dance stars? Fancy-footworking football legends? These are probably the stereotypes you'd bet would top a list of most influential Spanish celebrities… and you wouldn’t be too far from the truth. But how about the King, a leading economist and a 50-something gay film director? Thought not. From politics to music and from sport to film Spain has an eclectic mix of rich and famous. Here is a short guide to the country’s ten most influential and revered….

What happens when you wander across the Southern US, from east coast to west coast, asking every person you meet "¿Hablas español?" How many Americans can get by in a conversation in Spanish? How many will give it a good try? And are they all Latino?
Two journalists from BBC's Mundo Spanish language news service set out to find out for themselves. Their adventures and observations are recorded in a revealing English language article on the BBC site, and their entire trip is recorded, personally, warmly and with plenty of entertaining anecdotes and intriguing reflections, in their Spanish language blog on the BBC Mundo site.
We've added more videos to the don Quijote You Tube collection, including this Spanish television (Antena 3) news coverage of the reality show filmed at don Quijote and set to air on Finnish television in October. Watch it is a great chance to hear Spanish while you read English subtitles, too, all you beginners:
A recent article from Gannett, a leading US news service, stresses the growing demand for bilingual professionals in the US job market. Recruiters now not only seek conversational skills but the ability to read and write well in a language other than English. According to the article, only 11 percent of Americans speak English and a second language fluently. An excerpt:
"Most workers in the United States don't need to speak or write a second language. But recruiters say some telemarketing, banking, engineering and financial service companies are looking for workers and managers with bilingual skills because of the growing immigrant population in the United States or because they are doing more business in foreign countries.
Dayna Romanick, a national recruiter for Manpower Professional, said the Fortune 100 companies she deals with are asking more frequently for managers who speak Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and other languages.
And when it is not mandatory for some jobs, being bilingual "is icing on the cake."
"I had a wonderful time learning Spanish in Madrid," says Nick Bennett Britton, an IT consultant from Winchester. "After morning lessons, I'd go for long walks in the city, visiting museums, popping in to cafés and just enjoying life in Spain. Speaking the language and hearing it all around me made me progress much faster than I would have done in the UK."
Read more comments from students who have learned a language by travelling to the country where it's spoken (including several don Quijote students) in this article in the Telegraph.
King Juan Carlos, according to the 3000 Spaniards who participated in a television show called "The Spaniard of History" in May.
Miguel de Cervantes and Christopher Columbus (why, yes, in fact he was Italian, but apparently Spanish employees count), finished in 2nd and 3rd place, well behind King Juan Carlos.
Those voting for the King cited his "decisive role in the transition and in the attempted military coup of Febuary 23, 1981, known as 23-F in Spain. Just a week ago Spain celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first Voting Day of the new democratic Spain - a key moment... more»
A while back, I posted about worries in the UK that the country's (largely monolingual) graduates are less than prepared, linguistically, to compete for internationally focused jobs. Now the Irish Times reports that a lack of language skills may also be an obstacle for young Irish workers hoping to spend a few years working elsewhere in the EU.
According to the article, based on results of the first Eurobarometer survey carried out by the European Commission, young Irish citizens are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the EU, and the role it will play in their future. In fact, most hope to study, live and work in other EU Member States.
Yet the article continues on a less optimistic note:
I ran across an idea-inspiring article from a US newspaper on the web today. A Spanish teacher from New Jersey took her high school Spanish students on a 20 minute bus ride to a largely Hispanic town, and then sent them off to practice their Spanish with the locals.
"Si te acuerdas de ella, es que no estuviste allí."
"If you remember it, it's because you weren't there."
So goes the slogan Madrid is using for this year's homage to La Movida Madrileña, the explosion of art and irreverence that marked Spain's transition from the Franco era, 30 years ago.
Cafe Babel pays tribute to Madrid's 70s cultural revolution in a multi-article section this week, in English and Spanish. One article profiles three of the period's most iconic characters: Pedro Almodóvar, Fabio McNamara and Alaska.
A new, international exam and proficiency certificate for the Spanish language was unveiled by Spanish language experts at last month's Congress of Spanish Language Academies in Medellin, Colombia.
The new proficiency program will be titled "International System of Spanish as a Foreign Language, or SICELE for its Spanish initials.
In this article, we'll tell you a bit about the new test, and give you all the current details on the current Spanish proficiency exam, the DELE, and don Quijote's guaranteed prep courses.

According to an article published in El Pais a week or two ago (to which I unfortunately cannot link since it is in the paid archives section of the website), work on Gaudí's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is going quickly, and will be completely finished during 2008.
I wonder if it will attract as many tourists as a completed church as it does as a stunning work-in-progress?
March 19th marked the 125th anniversary of the laying of the first stone for the church.
Rigol also talked about a contest, to be launched in June, of ideas about just how to put the final touches on the Sagrada Familia. Now that could be fun...
